August Alpine Newsletter

Welcome to August!

It has been a crazy hot summer, but there has also been a lot happening across the Alpine program. While our athletes continue dryland training here in Jackson, our U14 athletes are currently training in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Here's a look at what we've been up to this month

Summer Dryland

We've had a great start to summer dryland. Our FIS and U16 athletes have been building strength, athleticism, and great training habits while preparing for the season ahead.

It's also been fun to see athletes training together across programs. Our FIS and Nordic athletes have combined training every Wednesday, while our U16 and FIS athletes have also shared workouts and adventure days throughout the summer.

A recent trip to Phelps Lake included a hike through Grand Teton National Park followed by plenty of fun jumping from the famous rock into the lake. This week, the group heads to Delta Lake for another day together in the Tetons.

Community Service

Thank you to everyone who came out to help with our first weed-pulling project back in July. Our next service project is Thursday, August 6, from 8:30–10:00 a.m. We hope you'll join us as we continue giving back to one of our primary training venues at Snow King.

Saas-Fee Training Camp

Our U14 athletes are currently training in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, taking advantage of one of the world's premier summer glacier training venues.

The athletes have enjoyed outstanding slalom and giant slalom training while also making the most of everything Saas-Fee has to offer. Off the snow, they've hiked in the Alps, cooled off in glacial rivers, explored the village, celebrated Swiss National Day, and experienced a little Swiss culture along the way.

The combination of world-class skiing, adventure, and travel has made this a memorable experience, and we look forward to welcoming everyone home on Saturday.

From Our Coaches

One of the highlights of this summer has been welcoming Matt Hoffman to Jackson and to the JHSC community. I asked Matt to share a few thoughts with our Alpine families about the start of the season and his vision for the FIS program. Here's an excerpt from his message:

Success in ski racing can mean a lot of different things. Of course we all enjoy seeing athletes reach the podium, qualify for championships, or achieve personal bests. But when I think about success, I look for the things that last longer than ski racing.

I want athletes to build friendships they'll carry for life, develop confidence through overcoming challenges, and genuinely enjoy coming to training each day. If they leave the program with meaningful relationships, a love for the sport, and excitement to keep learning, I believe we've done something worthwhile.

One phrase I've shared with the team this summer is, "Chase the experiences, not the points." If athletes embrace the process, support one another, and make the most of the opportunities in front of them, I believe the results will take care of themselves.

I'm excited for the experience and perspective Matt brings to JHSC and look forward to the positive impact he'll have on our athletes and coaches.

Athlete Recognition

Congratulations to first-year FIS athlete Taryn Moe, who will be traveling to New Zealand this week after being selected to attend a U.S. Ski & Snowboard National Development Group project.

This invitation-only project brings together many of the country's top developing athletes and is an outstanding opportunity for Taryn as she begins her FIS career.

Good luck, Taryn! We look forward to hearing about your experience when you return.
