Fall rollerskiing in Jackson Hole

October Nordic Newsletter

Fall Training Update

JHSC Nordic has been hard at work throughout the summer and now the fall as we continue our prep for the season ahead and have fun training!  The last few months we have been mostly focusing on building speed and intensity through plyometric exercises, interval training, strength work in the gym, and speed training!  As the weather turns and the leaves start to change, it is a clear signal that the duration of our workouts decreases and the intensity ratchets up.  We have had intervals up the Old Pass Road, speed work in South Park, bounding up Snow King, plyos at Rangeview Park, and many other intensity sessions over the past month.

We have also been having a lot of fun playing games like World Cup, Schizerball, ultimate frisbee, and rollerski hockey to make the training process fun and light heading into the winter. It is super important for practices to be fun and light in order to keep kids engaged while they have been participating in other sports such as NICA mountain biking, cross country running, lacrosse, and others.  We love that many of our skiers also participate in other sports and this is a key part of developing well-rounded athletes, but it also means that we need to adjust our training schedule accordingly to make sure people do not burn out or overtrain.  On a related note, congrats to all of our JHSC athletes that competed at State mountain biking champs last weekend in Boise!

One big aspect of our team is our shared goals and team culture.  Good team culture does not happen by accident, and we have already had individual meetings with every athlete as well as team goal setting with everybody to make sure that all people are on the same page about how we want to show up for ourselves and our teammates on a daily basis.  The athletes themselves are the drivers behind this process and they came up with five values that we will hold tight and touch back to throughout the winter to make sure everyone is swimming in the same direction!

Junior Nordic training began last week with some fun rollerski sessions, games on foot, and some running up Josies ridge!  These first few practices are mellow to help the Juniors transition back into the flow of training and ski-specific preparation after a few months off of ski practice.  Over the next few months until the ski season starts the Juniors will do tons of rollerski work, running speeds and time trials, and most importantly have a lot of fun playing games and bonding as a team!

Gear Swap & Equipment Options

Thanks to everybody who came to Skinny Skis this past month to get gear at a discount at Team Night!  We saw tons of families at Skinny Skis and it is always great to touch base with people before the season starts.  Kids got a lot of equipment and were able to interface with reps from Salomon, Rossignol, Alpina, Madshus, and Fischer.  We were able to get a ton of families in gear at an affordable price thanks to our community partners Skinny Skis!    Huge thank you to Skinny Skis for being such a great partner and helping families with discounted gear.

If you missed Team Night or still are on the hunt for some gear, you have a couple options still.  The JHSC Ski Swap is happening on Saturday, October 25th and is always an option to look for stuff.  Although going to the Swap is not a guarantee to find what you are looking for, there are typically some gems and good deals for families there.

If you are still looking for gear or you want to sell some used gear that is sitting in your garage, you should definitely check out the JHSC Nordic Internal Gear Swap google sheet.  You can list gear, or look for gear from others but this is a great way for Club families to help other families out by passing down gear.  You can find the sheet at the link below:
