1) Intro:
The days are getting shorter, the air is getting cooler and Freeride is busy preparing for the upcoming season! We've got lots going on this month with community events and our fall dryland training starting at the end of September. Myself and the rest of the coaching staff are super excited to get started with fall training in just a couple short weeks!
I recently suffered a severe hand injury and am unable to type. I'm learning to use talk to text software on this newsletter, please excuse any errors!
This newsletter will contain a re-cap of what's happened since our last newsletter and an update of events coming up this month.

2) Coaching Update:
As I’m sure many of you already know, Matt Newton will not be returning as our Head Competition Coach for the upcoming season. He is taking his talents to the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club as their FIS Park and Pipe Coach. We are sad to see Matt go, but excited for the opportunities this new position will bring him. Please take a minute to wish him the best of luck on his next big adventure (mnewton210@gmail.com, 315-663-4214) We’re fortunate to have the depth of staff which will allow returning coaches to take a bigger role in our program, as well as some new faces joining the team.
We’re excited to introduce Sydney Ricketts as our IFSA National Coordinator. Syd brings a wealth of experience as an alumni and longtime coach for the Alta-Bird Freeride program. She will be coaching our Competition and Progression + Team athletes and taking point on travel logistics for IFSA Nationals for the upcoming season.
“My name is Syd Ricketts and I am super excited to be joining the JHSC Freeride program this year! I have been involved in Freeride for over a decade between coaching and competing myself, and have spent the last 6 winters coaching with SBSEF. I grew up skiing in Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah, and competed in both juniors and as an adult in IFSA in North and South America. Freeride is so special to me because of the amazing community and experiences shared with amazing people! Coaching brings me such joy and I am so excited to see everyone prosper and improve their skiing this winter!" - Syd
Mike Decker will be expanding his coaching role as our Head Development Coach. Mike brings a wealth of experience to our team, and is focusing this season on improving our training schedule, specifically for our Shredders and Progression athletes. Mike will be coaching our Shredders and Progression team at JHMR each weekend and coaching our Competition team athletes on Wednesday early release.
Toby Koekkoek will be our USASA Coordinator this year. He’ll be coaching our Competition and Progression + athletes, and leading team travel for all of our USASA travel schedule.
Max Wilbrecht will be our IFSA Regional Coordinator. He’ll be coaching our Competition and Progression + athletes, and leading team travel for IFSA Regional events.
