Fern has been living in Jackson and involved with the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club for the past 14 years. He raced for the Sugarloaf Ski Team in Maine and was part of a program that eventually became the Carrabassett Valley Academy back in 1970-1973 (CVA was established in 1975). He coached FIS-level athletes for Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, in 2005-06 and coached for the JHSC Alpine FIS team in 2008. He has been running the JHSC Masters Program since 2008.

Was ranked top 25 in the country in Downhill in1973 while racing for the Sugarloaf Ski Team
